About Us and Our Cakes

When I say “us”, it’s really only me, Esther, with occasional help from Husband Darren.  I’ve been baking for over 20 years and have seen so many exciting products, ingredients, finishes, styles, etc affect cake decorating and baking - it’s breathtaking!  All these innovations, new skills and products keep cake baking and decorating so alive.  We are all so passionate about our cakes and how we can deliver fantastic product to all our customers.  Personally, I love having days when I can experiment with these new products, colours and styles - it keeps my offering up to date but I still bake the “traditional” cakes such as Farmhouse Fruit Cake and Lemon Drizzle.  These are very popular in our house!


Mostly, I am self-taught with a few classes/courses attended.  Sometimes online tutorials do not quite get the finer details - especially with me trying to learn how to make macarons!  I have advanced food allergen training, hold level 3 food safety certificate and The Cakery holds level 5 food hygiene rating.  I am based from my kitchen at home - sadly, we are not a shop or cafe.  Along side the cakes, I work part time in catering.




All my cakes are round “layer cakes”.  These cakes are so popular as they lend themselves to every decorating mode available and can be as tall as 8 layers (eek!) but most customers request either 3 or 4 layers.


The Cakery layer cakes are all based on my Madeira cake recipe (except Carrot Cake and Chocolate Fudge) and are filled with either buttercream, ganache or cream cheese frosting.  Finishing can be left naked (no finish at all), semi-naked (a skim of buttercream) or fully covered - buttercream or sugarpaste.


Please Note!  I do not make “character” or “themed” cakes such as garden allotments, bowling, trains, cars, racetracks, etc.

Should you wish to arrange a design meeting to look through photos and discuss your requirements, this will take place at Bowden Hall Hotel over tea or coffee.  Please respect the COVID policy and wear a mask if possible.
